Longford Tidy Town’s say there’s too much reliance on volunteers to keep town litter free

Longford Tidy Towns committee is giving a cautious welcome to today’s IBAL report which shows the town now among the top five cleanest towns in the country.

IBAL inspectors said in their latest inspection that the town is maintaining the high standards of previous years and it praised the condition of approach roads into the town, as well as the area around St Mel’s Cathedral and Dunnes Stores car park.

Reacting to the news today, Michael Keenan from Longford Tidy Towns Committee says they believe it’s not enough to rely on the work of volunteers to keep the town tidy.

He says the tidy towns committee is calling for an additional person to be employed in the town to better enforce the litter laws.
