Longford Fine Gael Senator Micheal Carrigy is adding his voice to calls on Sinn Fein Leader Mary Lou McDonald to sanction party members who try to intimidate people on social media.

Senator Carrigy is the party spokesperson on media in the Seanad and says while Sinn Fein maintains its actively opposed to cyber bullying it has also recently advertised for "online activists".

He says anytime a member of another party puts something online they are met with an avalanche of abuse from these activists.

The Longford politician says while the issue isn't confined to the Sinn Fein party, it's clear that the online bullying has become a serious problem among some members.
