Longford IFA chair hopes €50m aid package for beef farmers will be paid immediately

A local farmers’ representative has called for the €50m aid package for the beef sector to be paid out immediately.

Gavin White, chairperson of Longford IFA says that some farmers have been pushed to the breadline because of Brexit.

The Abbeyshrule beef farmer made his comments after the European Commission announced a €50m rescue package for the sector which the Government is being urged to match and bring to €100m.

While welcoming today’s news, Gavin says that the funds need to be released to farmers as soon as possible as they struggle to buy meal and restock.
