Longford Gardai urging people not to make non-essential journeys

Gardai in Longford are reminding the public that they should not be travelling outside of their homes unless it is for essential reasons.

Checkpoints have been carried out across the Shannonside Northern Sound region over the last week enforcing physical distancing regulations as well as monitoring people engaged in non-essential journeys.

Gardai in Longford are reporting a large volume of people in the greater town centre area in areas such as the Battery Road and the Mall in the last 48 hours and are concerned people may not be adhering to HSE advice.

The messages comes as the Justice Minister believes new Garda powers won’t need to be enforced too often.

Regulations which will allow Gardai to force people to go home if they’re not abiding by the public health advice are set to be finalised this week.
