A new charity is being set up in Longford in memory of a teenage boy and the love and devotion his dog Cooper brought him towards the end of his young life.

Cian's Kennels is hoping to raise enough funds to provide a kennels for children's pets to be able to be housed near Our Lady's Children's hospital.

Cian Neary from Killashee was just 15 years old when he passed away having been diagnosed with cancer but he had been given the dog after he had asked for one shortly after his initial diagnosis.

Cian's parents say Cooper the Labrador brought a hugely positive influence into Cian's and their lives at a very difficult time and they believe other children should be able to have the comfort of their pets even if they are in hospital.

Cian's mother Evelyn told the Joe Finnegan show that Cooper had forged a great bond with his owner and the family and they'd like to bring that sense of comfort to others when it's needed.
