Almost 150 additional people joined Longford unemployment queues last month compared to June. July’ s unemployment figures show an increase across the board in the number of people without full time work in the Shannonside region.
County Longford recorded the single biggest increase in its monthly figures between June and July, with an additional 147 people signing on last month – bringing the county’s total unemployed to 2634. In Roscommon the county’s unemployment level is now at 2,239, the five successive month it has noted a rise with with an extra 122 people signing on last month compared to June.
In Leitrim an increase of 91 people on the live register brings the total number of people unemployed in the county to 1,847. The large increase may be linked to additional third level students signing on the register while out of college, but in Longford last year, just seven extra people were added to the register between June and July, while in Leitrim it was 71 and in Roscommon it was 135.
Athlone’s unemployment total is also now above 2,000 people with an extra 83 people signing on last month – while 2609 people are signing on in Mullingar.
