Longford Councillors angry at ‘snub’ by some presidential nominees

Longford Councillors have voted not to back any presidential hopeful amid claims that the county has been snubbed by nominees.

Three possible presidential candidates were expected to formally address councillors this morning at a specially convened meeting.

But only one, Roscommon native John Groarke attended with pro-life candidate Sarah Louise Mulligan sending a video presentation.

Journalist Gemma O’Doherty had been expected to be present but went to Limerick instead to seek a nomination there.

Former Dragon’s Den investor Sean Gallagher was also due to speak to the meeting even though he has already secured his place on the ballot sheet.

Several councillors including Gerry Warnock who described the meeting as ‘a damp squib’ said the poor attendance represented a snub to Longford.
