Longford Councillor fears new plans could reduce number of local representatives

A Longford County Councillor has warned that the local authority could be facing a reduction in its elected representatives under new plans revealed by the government.

Ahead of the local elections in 2019, the government has announced it is introducing two commissions to examine electoral boundaries and municipal district areas to see if they are being fairly and properly represented.

However, Councillor Gerry Warnock believes the terms of reference of the commissions are focused on developing local government around urban centres, which could see an abolition of the current Longford municipal district which covers mid-Longford- and instead have it replaced with a Longford town M.D.
