Longford Councillor calls for non-Irish criminals who steal copper to be deported

There are calls for non-Irish people who are convicted of theft of copper piping from homes and subsequently destroy those properties to be sent back to their own country.

Superintendent Brian Mohan confirmed at this week’s Joint Policing Meeting that a person is due before Longford District court today following a joint operation targeting copper cylinder thefts since the start of 2018.

The meeting heard that there has been an increase in burglaries in the Longford and Granard Garda districts since the beginning of this year – and that a premises was searched recently where 8 copper cylinders were discovered.
