Longford council to request Lanesboro Power Station be retained in community

Longford council is to write to the Department of Climate Action and Environment, and the Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey, asking that the Lanesboro Power Station be retained in the community when peat production stops.

The issue was the subject of two separate notices of motion tabled by Leas Cathaoirleach of the council Ger Farrell, and Independent councillor Mark Casey at the monthly meeting of Longford council this week.

Councillor Farrell says while the boiler and internal workings of the plant will obviously have to be decommissioned, the structure of the building and the fact that it houses a grid connection for the ESB could have serious potential for the future.
