Longford Council agrees slight changes to rent scheme in order to allow for broader appeals

Council tenants in Longford will now be able to appeal their rent increase on grounds other than just medical hardship.

At a special meeting last night, councillors argued for greater leniency and new terms of the differential rent scheme following considerable pressure from the public.

However, senior officials gave granted just one concession on the new rate; persons in receipt of a non-contributory pension will have their weekly rate capped at 35 euro with a 15 euro charge for additional occupancy.

The only other concessions agreed to by officials are allocating additional funding raised to housing maintenance, and committing to review at least every five years.
