Longford conservation officer appeals to people not to light bog fires

The Conservation Officer for Co Longford is appealing to people not to set fires to clear land on bogs or to bulldoze hedgerows at this time of year.

Sue Moles who works with the National Parks and Wildlife Service was speaking as an orange fire warning has been issued for the country until next Friday.

She says fires obviously have a devastating effect on wildlife who are breeding at this time, and she also revealed that despite laws on hedge cutting or interference after the 1st of March, she’s currently investigating several instances of people who have bulldozed hedgerows to make ways for developments in the past couple of weeks.
