Longford childcare workers say government has failed them

A Longford childcare worker says she is very disheartened by the wages paid to staff in early education.

Eva Sineko, who’s originally from Poland, says her Masters qualification in childcare is not being properly recognised by the government here.

She’s one of a number of childcare staff in the country who staged a symbolic protest this afternoon to highlight the government’s failure to invest in the staffing of pre-schools and crèches.

Speaking on the Lets Talk show today, Eva says she was happy to see the curriculum and quality systems brought into childcare here over recent years, but she says the government has failed to do the same for the sectors workforce.

Una Mulvihill who works as an assistant manager at the Catkins nursery attached to Longford Women’s Link says the low wages are making the sector unsustainable for the future.
