The Chairman of Longford County Council is rejecting claims by An Bord Pleanala that a Supermac’s plaza on the Ballinalee road would have impacted negatively on Longford town centre.
Fine Gael councillor Micheal Carrigy was reacting to the news that the planning appeals board has overturned a planning decision by the local authority to grant permission for the development of a service station, drive through restaurant and retail units at Lisnamuck on the outskirts of the town. A four star hotel had also been mentioned for phase two of the development.
Councillor Carrigy who’s been heavily involved with tourism promotion in the county for several years says the loss of the proposed hotel is huge given the extra business it could have attracted to the town as a whole. The Fine Gael councillor says he believes the location of the plaza and hotel would actually have drawn people off the motorway and it towards the town, rather than having them driving past and not stopping at all.
