There’s good news for the town of Ballymahon today regarding a long-running saga over car parking.
A deal has finally been agreed between the local authority and the church over the purchase of a piece of land towards the Longford end of the town, known locally as “The Priest’s Field”.
The field which is beside the local national school will be used now to ease traffic congestion and improve safety during the drop-off collection time for pupils.
OPW Minister Kevin Boxer Moran says its proximity to the royal canal also means that it can be looked at in terms of being used for “smart travel”, by putting in some facilities to encourage people to cycle along the banks of the canal to work in other areas.
It’s understood work is to begin immediately on the field, and the Athlone based TD says it will greatly enhance facilities in the town which are set to be further developed when work begins on the new roundabout and pedestrian crossing…
