Traffic congestion in Ballymahon is set to be eased within the next few days when a new car park beside St Mathews National School becomes operational.
Acquiring the land for the facility has been the object of several years’ work in the town and funding to buy some of what’s known as “The Priest’s Field” was approved in August of this year.
OPW Minister Kevin Boxer Moran also said at the time that the car park’s proximity to the Royal Canal means it can be looked at in terms of “smart travel” by putting in some facilities to encourage people to use the canal walk.
Councillor Pat O’Toole who’s Chairman of Ballymahon Municipal District says one of the main benefits of the new car park will be improved safety for pupils and everyone else during school pick-up and drop-off times.
He also says he hopes this represents the first phase of the new facility and that it can be enlarged in the not too distant future:
