It’s hoped that the new health boards will have a positive impact on smaller counties such as Longford.
Until now, Longford was in together with all of Dublin, with its large hospitals, but it only has part of Dublin and Kildare in its’ new configuration.
Longford will be part of Area B, one of the six new regions, along with Westmeath, Offaly, Laois, Kildare and parts of Dublin and Wicklow.
It will be assigned a budget based on population.
Granard Councillor PJ Reilly, who was previously a chair of the Dublin Mid-Leinster Regional Forum, believes the new structure can yield more resources for Longford.
