Government denies introducing water charges through ‘back door’

It’s feared that water charges could be creeping in through the back door.

Yesterday, Irish Water got the go-ahead to start charging people who waste water.

Any household using more than their allowance will face a bill, if they don’t fix potential leaks or reduce their usage.

The Housing Minister is denying that the Government is bringing in water charges through the backdoor.

Minister Eoghan Murphy says the measures are about conservation rather than raising revenue.

However, charges are likely to become a political issue.

Longford Sinn Fein representative Tina Keown says the basic principle remains people are being charged for water.
