The Garda watchdog has confirmed it is investigating an alleged incident in Lanesborough this week in which three people were allegedly assaulted by a man who later died in hospital.
The alleged incident occured on Monday afternoon when two men, aged in their 70s and 80s, and a third woman, in her 50s, sustained injuries at a house in the village.
A man in his 20s, who was allegedly involved in the incident, was taken to University Hospital Galway by ambulance but subsequently died. A post mortem was due to take place on Tuesday afternoon and the results of this are likely to impact on the garda investigation into the matter.
Separately, the Garda Siochana Ombudsman has confirmed to Shannonside FM that a referral was received by GSOC under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005,
The incident has been examined and has now progressed into a Section 95 non-criminal investigation.
Such investigations are only concerned with whether there may have been a breach of the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations and any outcome will relate solely to whether evidence of a breach was found, or not.
