Figures show Longford sent second highest number of people in Ireland to jail

Figures from the Irish prison service claim that Longford recorded the second highest number of people sent to jail in Ireland across 2014 and 2015, per capita.

According to figures obtained by the Irish Daily Mail, based on committals per 100,000 of population, Longford had a rate of 528 committals, which works out at 412 Longford residents jailed across the two years.

Roscommon recorded a figure of 214 per 100,000 population, while Leitrim recorded the fourth lowest jail rate, of 131 people per 100,000 of population, or just 83 people across two years.

In total 12,700 people were jailed in 2014, with a slight increase recorded in 2015 of 13,500 people put behind bars
