Fianna Fail to select Westmeath General Election candidates tonight

Fianna Fail will finalise its General election candidates for Longford-Westmeath this evening at its convention to be held in Mullingar.

Incoming Longford County Councillor Joe Flaherty is already assured of his place on the ticket, having won the Longford nomination at the beginning of September, and the party’s Westmeath candidate will be known later.

Current TD Robert Troy is confirmed to be running, and it was previously suggested that councillor Frankie Keena would also seek to be added to the ballot paper at the next General Election.

However, Shannonside FM understands that the party is seeking a one- candidate strategy in both counties and that the Athlone local representative may withdraw his name tonight from the process as a result of this.

The convention gets underway in the Bloomfield hotel after 8pm tonight.
