There are concerns that an application by the ESB to amend its EPA licence for the Lough Ree Power plant will cause greater harm to fish stocks.
The utility has sought an amendment to its environmental licence in relation to its cooling water discharge temperature in the river Shannon, after an EPA investigation and with legal proceedings pending.
Operations are suspended at the plant, and it’s not yet known when they will recommence.
Andy Burnett of the Lough Ree Angling Hub says if what they have heard in respect of the license change is true, it will not be a positive development for fish.
He says they had put forward a solution to unblock an area at the top of the hot stretch that would solve the problem.
