Environment Minister hopes Ballymahon gas pipeline will extend to entire region

The Minister for the Environment is hopeful that a gas pipeline extension from Athlone to Ballymahon can be developed beyond the south Longford town to the greater Shannonside region.

Denis Naughten made the comments at an event in Ballymahon on Saturday evening, confirming a pipeline, worth an estimated five million euro, will be routed underground bringing natural gas to Longford for the very first time, and crucially, supplying the Center Parcs project in Newcastle Wood.

The UK holiday company’s Longford Forest project was described as the key reason behind bringing the gas pipeline to Longford, and the development in Ballymahon will have wide reaching implications for all surrounding counties and towns.

Minister Naughten believes the development of the pipeline could be a significant for several other areas in this region too :

Minister for the OPW and Longford Westmeath TD Kevin Boxer Moran claimed that the news of the pipeline’s extension means Longford is now on a par with its regional rivals
