€5m deal allows gas to extend from Athlone to Ballymahon

The government has signed a €5-million deal that will allow a gas pipeline to run from Athlone to Ballymahon.

Earlier this year, Center Parcs struck an agreement with Gas Networks Ireland that would allow fuel to be provided to its new Longford Forest project, set to open in 2019.

The source of the pipeline wasn’t then known.

However, over the past 24 hours, Finance Minister Paschal Donohue has signed a deal that will allow gas to be provided from Athlone instead of Mullingar, which would have been €5 million cheaper.

With the extension coming to Center Parcs from Athlone, it’ll enable the pipeline to be further extended into Longford town at a later point.

The deal will be formally announced by Environment Minister Denis Naughten in Ballymahon library on Saturday.

Councillor Micheál Carrigy, who represents the Granard Municipal District, has welcomed the news.

Athlone-based Junior Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran also says it’s a major boost to businesses and homes throughout the region.
