Over €1 million was paid by local Gardai for towing and recovery services in the past two years.

More than €11 million was spent by all Garda divisions across the country.

Gardai avail of towing and recovery services to remove vehicles seized under the Road Traffic Act, to recover official Garda vehicles, or where a vehicle is needed for investigative, evidential or technical examination processes.

Non-contracted firms are used when a request is put in for emergency situations, or where the location of the vehicle presented a danger to other road users and required immediate removal.

Freedom of Information figures released to Shannonside Northern Sound showed over half of all payments locally were made Gardai in Roscommon and Longford.

Since 2018, €537,631 was paid for recovery services in the two counties.

The total in Sligo-Leitrim was €311,800 - however in that division over €10,000 more was spent between January and July of this year than in all of 2018.

Just over €200,000 was paid by the Cavan-Monaghan division since 2018.

It had the fourth lowest spent so far in 2020 at €24,882, with Dublin East, Clare and Cork West recording lower figures.

Across the country, €11,129,386 was paid by Gardai for towing and recovery services.
