Cross-party voting secured Dáil seat for Longford

The people of Longford made sure they had a representative in the 33rd Dail by voting cross party between the two main candidates in the county.

That’s according to newly elected Fianna Fail TD Joe Flaherty who took the second seat for Longford Westmeath in the weekend elections having received a huge transfer from his Fine Gael council colleague Micheal Carrigy.

Councillor Carrigy was excluded on the 9th count and his almost 7,000 votes were then up for grabs between the remaining candidates.

The transfer of just over 2,800 votes from Micheal Carrigy to Joe Flaherty meant the Fianna Fail candidate was far ahead of his other competition and took the second seat in the constituency with a vote of 11,064.
