Controversy over disabled parking in Longford

A taxi-driver has pleaded with Longford County Council for discretion after receiving a fine for parking illegally in the town recently.

Paddy Boyle was fined €40 for parking on a kerb after dropping off a customer who is a wheelchair user who needed to conduct business in the post office.

However, as the woman is unable to use the wheelchair herself, Paddy helps her in and out of the building and on one a recent occasion, he was fined by a traffic warden for illegal parking.

As the taxi does not have a special wheelchair parking pass, he is not able to use the designated parking spaces in the town.

He believes that he is forced into illegally parking as there is not enough ordinary parking spaces on the street at present, especially on when the woman wants to come into the town on Friday’s

He told the Joe Finnegan show that while he admits he parked illegally, he believes that he is left with no choice:

Mary Ganley from Roscommon Disability Support Service believes that if the woman in question was to apply for a personal wheelchair parking space pass, the taxi would be able to use the designated spaces in the town:

Longford county council was contacted for a response but at the time of broadcast, have not yet commented on the issue.
