Carrigy wins Longford Fine Gael convention

Ballinalee councillor Micheal Carrigy won last night’s Fine Gael selection convention in Longford by a comfortable majority.

The north Longford councillor beat Paul Ross from the south of the county by 232 votes to 166 at a well-attended event, which also saw party leader Leo Varadkar in attendance for the entire proceedings.

Councillor Carrigy says while he was naturally very happy with the result, he is well aware there is a lot of work to be done to win back a Fine Gael seat in the county.

Meanwhile, reacting in Longford last night to the results of the British general election, Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar says he hopes it may result in a softer Brexit and no economic border for Ireland.
