Carrigy: Longford will benefit from Athlone’s ‘capital’ status

Longford will not lose out as a result of Athlone being granted ‘regional capital’ status.

That’s according to Longford Fine Gael councillor and general election candidate Micheál Carrigy, who was responding to criticism from other midland towns about Athlone being chosen for development.

While it has still to be officially confirmed this Friday, it’s widely understood that Athlone and Sligo will both be designated as regional capitals on the day.

Councillor Carrigy points out that the submission made by Longford County Council on the National Planning Framework supported Athlone’s case for development.

He said every small town can’t expect to get designation, and there is no doubt Longford can benefit directly from Athlones status in the region.
