Calls for Longford greyhound track to be retained for recreational use

Longford councillor Gerry Warnock says it’s important to maintain the zoning of the Longford Greyhound Stadium area as recreational.

Speaking in the aftermath of news of the closure last Friday, the Independent councillor says it is sad to see people losing their jobs and the track being closed after a long history, but he says it’s also important that the future zoning of the site be safeguarded for public use. He says the site was originally bequeathed to the people of Longford by Lord Longford for recreational use and had been used for many years for soccer playing.

Councillor Warnock says the nature of the site lends itself to athletics, but he’d also like to see a return to soccer facilities which are in big demand locally.
