There are calls for more climate friendly conditions to be applied to planning conditions in Longford.
Fianna Fail Cllr Seamus Butler suggested that all new housing should have rainwater harvesting included as a necessity for water conservation and reuse.
Independent Cllr Mark Casey also called for it to be compulsory that houses include dual flush toilets as well as another water conservation method.
The suggestions emerged during a discussion around the Pre-Draft County Development Plan from 2021 to 2027 at a recent meeting of Longford County Council.
Responding Director of Services John Brannigan said that the county development plan has already been climate-proofed, encouraging climate friendly practices, chapter by chapter, and that this was something that could be looked at in terms of applying planning conditions to approved applications instead.
