Burke raises new concerns over Longford Garda numbers

Serious concern has been expressed in the Dáil by a Westmeath TD about how the numbers of gardaí based at stations around the country is being assessed.

Fine Gael Deputy Peter Burke claims there are just four and a half members based at Edgeworthstown Garda station, despite information given to him in parliamentary questions suggesting that 11 gardai are based in the town.

Deputy Burke said he’s been told that due to sick leave, transfers and other matters, there is one one full-time sergeant and three gardaí attached to the station, with another sergeant’s time divided 50/50 between Edgeworthstown and Granard.

The TD said while he welcomed Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan’s news of additional recruits coming to the Longford/Roscommon division in December, he is still concerned about how the numbers based at each station are being assessed.
