Athlone councillor says Irish Water should have better back up systems

An Athlone councillor is calling on Irish Water to have better back-up systems in place at water treatment plants.

Fianna Fail councillor Frankie Keena made the call as restrictions are due to be put in place tonight in a large area of Athlone in an effort to bring water levels at the Annagh treatment plant back up to normal.

The levels in the reservoir dropped dramatically at the weekend following an electrical fault at the treatment plant.

Councillor Keena says there should be a better system in place to guard against water levels dropping.
