Over 1,400 men across the Shannonside region took up the offer of paternity benefit last year

Over 1,400 men across the Shannonside region took up the offer of paternity benefit from the government last year in the Shannonside/Northernsound region.

Introduced in September 2016, the scheme allows fathers take two weeks off, paid, from their employer to help their partners care for a new baby.

The greatest number of men taking up the payment last year was in in Cavan, where 422 men took up the offer, followed by 361 fathers in Monaghan.

Numbers of men taking up the offer in the Shannonside region were fewer than their neighbours, with 273 fathers in Roscommon, 191 in Longford and 174 in Leitrim using the paternity benefit in 2018.
