Over 13,000 meals were donated to charities in the Shannonside region last year

Charities in the Shannonside region are being asked to get in touch with a major supermarket in order to be able to expand a service that distributes surplus food to good causes.

Over 13,000 meals were donated to charites in the Shannonside region last year through the Lidl FoodCloud programme, with €6,000 also generated for youth mental health charity jigsaw in Longford and Roscommon.

The German supermarket, which has branches across the Shannonside region, also claims that its FoodCloud programme has also led to tonnes of food being diverted away from landfill.
