Dozens of homes across the Shannonside region are set to benefit from government funding to make them more energy efficient.

Eight counties are share in a new 20 million euro scheme to retrofit 750 council owned homes.

3.33 million is being given to the local authority in Longford as part of the Midlands Retrofit Project and Roscommon County Council will also receive 1.11 million euro.

Works are expected to begin from October in Longford and in Roscommon by November.

The announcement of retrofit funding comes hours after grants were announced for a number of energy efficiency projects in the Shannonside region.

92 Homes in Leitrim, Longford and Offaly will be part of a €2.4m deep retrofit project, as well as Roscommon buildings such as King House, Roscommon County Council's Aras an Chontae, Strokestown Community Centre, Monksland Community Centre also benefitting from a deep retrofit upgrade in a 3.6 million project.
