Water levels on River Shannon fell steadily in last week

Water levels on the river Shannon fell steadily over the last six days.

According to the latest statement from Westmeath County Council, levels have dropped almost seven inches below the highest level recorded during this flooding event, which was  Wednesday 4 March.

Officials say the combination of permanent and temporary flood defences in Athlone town continues to be effective in preventing significant flooding and it is anticipated that river levels will continue to fall slowly over the coming days.

The Council says it will maintain the temporary flood defences in Athlone pending more certainty regarding the medium term forecast in terms of rainfall and river levels.
