A Shannonside union representative has forecast that a strike by up to 10,000 hospital support staff will have “a massive impact.”
SIPTU’s Sandra Flanagan was speaking as workers get set to stage a 24-hour strike in hospitals including all those in this region on June 20th.
The action is being taken by support workers including healthcare assistants and household and catering staff in a row over pay increases linked to a job evaluation scheme.
The union says the staff affected are the lowest paid grade within the HSE and the wage hikes would mean from €1,500 to €3,100 per annum each.
Sandra, who is Industrial Organiser for the Health Division in Sligo/Leitrim, says there was unanimous support for industrial action in Sligo University Hospital.
And she told Shannonside FM that this is a reflection of the frustration being felt by the support workers.
