Staff to be laid-off for up to six weeks at two local newspapers

The National Union of Journalists is calling on newspaper groups in the Shannonside region to reconsider laying off staff due to the Coronavirus crisis.

It’s reported today that employees of the Iconic Media group, which publishes the Leitrim Observer as well as the Longford Leader newspapers, is laying off a number of reporters and senior editorial staff for a period of six weeks due to a collapse in advertising revenue.

It’s understood the company, which publishes 20 newspapers across the country, is due to make an official statement this afternoon.

Last Friday, the Celtic Media Group, which publishes newspapers in Westmeath and Cavan-Monaghan, announced cutbacks to its staffing levels.
