It’s hoped special funding will be provided for any possible home builders looking to construct houses with new untested sewerage technology in Leitrim.
Leitrim TD Martin Kenny this week introduced his amendment to the Local Government (Water Pollution) Act 1977 which could allow for the construction of one-off homes in the county.
Currently, most areas of Leitrim fail the percolation test which means it is almost impossible for one-off homes to be built
Earlier this month a delegation from Leitrim County Council met with environment officials as well as representatives from the Department of Rural Affairs to try and make some progress on clearing the planning hurdle.
It’s hoped a new pilot program, trialing new environmentally friendly technological advances in wastewater treatment can begin in Leitrim this autumn.
However, the pilot is likely to cost any prospective home builder €20,000, with the large bulk of the cost-weighted towards the monitoring of any discharge from the system.
