Sligo Leitrim Sinn Fein Deputy Martin Kenny is welcoming the beef compensation fund announced in recent days, but says there is need for more detail about exactly who will benefit.
Deputy Kenny says there’s no secret about the falling prices and the fact that farmers have been suffering from the effects of a looming Brexit.
He says that the people who need money form this fund are the primary producers and he wouldn’t like to think that it would end up with the processors.
Martin Kenny says there’s also a need to support breeders, who sell on and don’t necessarily finish cattle for slaughter, but have a vital role in the industry.
He says that funding is often announced in advance of elections, but the real story will be where it is to be spent.
