Farmer in isolated areas of Leitrim are being urged to take care of their mental health by attending a special event tonight.
According to the CSO, men make up eighty percent of suicides and the 45 to 54 year-olds in rural isolation are one of the most vulnerable groups.
Organised by former Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year, Hubert McHugh and Valerie Cogan, Leitrim’s Health is Wealth gets underway in the Landmark Hotel in Carrick on Shannon tonight.
Ballinamore journalist, broadcaster and author, Paul Williams, will host the event which will see speakers including footballer Shane Carthy, singer Sean Keane, author Michael Harding and Catherine Corless give personal testimonies about their mental health struggles.
It’s free and gets underway at 7pm with support groups and agencies all hosting information stalls.
Carrick on Shannon Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire says that while everyone can attend she’s believes it’s especially important for isolated men to think about coming.
