New figures from the Simon Community show it is increasingly difficult for single people to rent a property in the Shannonside region if they are on social welfare
The charity’s latest report says 92 percent of rental properties nationally are now beyond people’s means.
The charity’s Locked Out Report gathered data using daft.ie over 3 days in May and showed that in Athlone, only one property was available to rent within RS/HAP limits and rent for a two bed property in the town ranged from €675 to €875.
In Leitrim 12 fewer properties to rent were available in May, compared to February and no properties were available within the limit of €340 per month for a single person.
Rent in Leitrim for a two bed home ranged from €470 to 490 euro for the available properties.
