Overcrowding at Sligo hospital increases to 40

The INMO says Sligo hospital is not adopting an escalation policy despite the high numbers of people waiting at the hospital for admission to beds since Monday of this week.

31 people were on trolleys at the hospital on Monday, that rose to 34 yesterday, and figures released by the nursing organisation show there are 40 people now waiting for admission.

Maura Hickey who is industrial relations officer with the INMO for the North West says there is an obvious problem with bed capacity at the hospital which doesn’t have enough beds to cope with the increased population of recent years.

She also says though that the hospital isn’t implementing the escalation policy that other hospitals do to try to alleviate overcrowding, and she says this could result in the situation becoming even worse and spilling over into the weekend.
