Residents in Leitrim will soon have access to a property marking machine in a bid to deter thefts in the county.
This week’s meeting of the Joint Policing Committee has heard that such devices have already proved hugely popular in other areas including Sligo.
Jim Fox, Crime Prevention Officer in Sligo, explained the etching machine imprints the owner’s eircode on their property with trailers and quads among the most popular items.
Signs indicating the marking has been done then acts as a deterrent to would-be thieves and the etching aids gardai when stolen goods are recovered and need to be returned.
Chair of the JPC, Sinead Guckian, says that Leitrim will either share, lease or buy a machine to ensure the service is available to communities in the county early next year.
