A sale of suck calves will take place at Carrigallen Mart in Co Leitrim next Monday under the new protocols announced by government earlier this week.
The marts were closed for a time as a result of the coronavirus lockdown but a new agreement was brokered to support the food supply chain and to avoid animal welfare issues.
Under the new measures, marts are taking calls from farmers who want to sell animals and then contacting their database of buyers and trying to agree a price that both sides are satisfied with.
Carrigallen mart manager Helen Kells says weigh-ins for some of the animals begins at the mart today and then sellers and buyers will be given
separate time slots to arrive at the mart on Monday to drop off and collect the livestock.
She admits it’s not an ideal situation
