Leitrim TD urges government to fund hospital to replace St Patrick’s in Carrick

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo-Leitrim Martin Kenny is calling on the government to commit to providing the funding to ensure the replacement hospital for St Patrick’s is built by 2021.

His call comes after it was reported on Shannonside FM that HIQA, the health watchdog, has revealed it’s received a ‘high number’ of allegations of abuse in the  Carrick-on-Shannon hospital.

Some of the incidents had been referred to the gardaí.

Since the last Hiqa inspection, 11 notifications of alleged, suspected or actual abuse were
reported, while six further incidents of aggression and violence in Monsignor Young unit and three in Dr. McGarry ward were reported.

The Sinn Fein deputy says that funding for the new unit now needs to be put into place.
