Leitrim Sinn Fein TD says Fine Gael will change position in coming weeks

Leo Varadkar has conceded he won’t be the Taoiseach when the next Dáil is formed as his party prepares to head for the opposition benches.

After a six hour parliamentary party meeting last night Fine Gael TDs decided to leave Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil to attempt to form a government.

Extreme reluctance was expressed for a grand coalition with Fianna Fáil – though Leo Varadkar hasn’t ruled it out if there’s no other options to form a government.

Leo Varadkar says despite the numbers suggesting it as the only workable option, a grand coalition shouldn’t be needed.

Sinn Fein TD for Sligo/Leitrim North Roscommon, Martin Kenny, says he wouldn’t be surprised if Fine Gael’s position changes in the coming weeks.
