Leo Varadkar has conceded he won’t be the Taoiseach when the next Dáil is formed as his party prepares to head for the opposition benches.
After a six hour parliamentary party meeting last night Fine Gael TDs decided to leave Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil to attempt to form a government.
Extreme reluctance was expressed for a grand coalition with Fianna Fáil – though Leo Varadkar hasn’t ruled it out if there’s no other options to form a government.
Leo Varadkar says despite the numbers suggesting it as the only workable option, a grand coalition shouldn’t be needed.
Sinn Fein TD for Sligo/Leitrim North Roscommon, Martin Kenny, says he wouldn’t be surprised if Fine Gael’s position changes in the coming weeks.
