Leitrim and Roscommon’s unemployment figures show significant rise in January

Almost forty additional people claimed unemployment benefit in Leitrim and Roscommon last month.

In contrast, Longford’s live register figure grew just by three last month compared to December.

Figures published by the CSO show Leitrim’s total unemployment figure for last month stands at 1804 – a rise of 37 on figures for December.


Year-on-year the unemployment levels in the county are down over 200, and 1,000 fewer than January 2009

In Roscommon, an extra 39 people were also added to the county’s social protection figures to bring its total to 2,204 but it’s down over 300 year-on-year.

In Longford, the number of people unemployed in the county now stands at 2,514 and it saw a reduction of three on its figures from December to January

Compared to 2009, there are 1,800 more people at work this year in contrast to the height of the recession.

In Athlone the January live register figure was 1901, up 35 on December figures, down 1,000 on ten years ago. ]
