People across rural Ireland need to use alternatives to pesticides that have serious health and environmental risks.
Leitrim based, research group, the Good Energies Alliance based is issuing the advice, after Irish Water's confirmation that glyphosate has been detected in the public drinking water supplies in four different areas of Co Leitrim, including Ballinamore.
The pesticide is a key component of many very common weedkillers used by gardeners and farmers and has been the subject of legal battles on its links to increased rates of cancer.
While the HSE says the levels detected in the Leitrim supplies are not a threat to public health, Aedin McLoughlin of the Good Energies Alliance says it's time for people to use their purchasing power to drive down the cost of alternatives.
